Cultural differences are challenging. But, keeping a genuine human smile on your face is so important for a successful experience. Not only does it mean you are happy, but many times it is the most important part of reaching out to students to help them learn from you. Your Korean colleagues also want to know you are comfortable and will extend their kindness and hospitality to you. Of course, misunderstandings cut both ways, and ultimately, you are the foreigner. So it is so helpful to have other people, like Alistair and other teachers, here in Korea for practical guidance and support when you need it. Teaching in Korea can teach you many unexpected lessons if we are open-minded and see problems as opportunities for finding solutions.
